Providing urban explorers with the key to urban-avantgarde bengaluru project.
Urban-Avantgarde was a multi-faceted, month-long series of events from graffiti and mural inspired painting on public walls of Bangalore to experimental dance performances, workshops, lectures, exhibitions, video screenings and music events.
As part of Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities, it presented an artistic dialogue between contemporary artists from both countries and various disciplines, who unconventionally expanded the modes of expression of urban culture.
This book was designated to act as an access key to provide urban explorers with a consolidated information and exploration tool while discovering the artistic remains of this project throughout Urban Bengaluru.
This opportunity saw me develop and define the overall design concept and collaborate with another designer to produce the map. Typography and overall style were chosen as a balanced mix between contemporary design notions and more approachable, less rigid graffiti-style design elements.
For our cover page I asked fellow graffiti artist Jas Charanjiva to contribute a fitting freehand lettering concept in line with overall established design. In an attempt to make the artist essay pages in section two more human and experimental, I invited participating artists to send me their handwritten chapter titles, which are featured on their corresponding pages.
Within section three, fellow designer Sebastian crafted a map of Malleshwaram which consolidated book contents with their respective locations including a simple numbering system. This made it easy for explorers to locate the artists work.
